The joys of a shed

A man's shed is his castle, isn't that the phrase? Not quite? Well, it could be with these fantastic ideas for converting garden storage spaces or metal sheds into an extra pad just for the man of the house.
One man, Alan Cook, transformed his three metre long shed into a paradise with a games console, fridge, satellite TV, broadband and leather recliner. You don't have to go to such extreme lengths to turn your shed into an extra room.
Unofficially, there is a tradition of men going to read in the shed, the quality of the publication varies, naturally, but why not make use of the space and turn it into a proper reading room? Put up some shelves or buy a bookcase. Move in a nice comfy chair and some good lighting. Alternatively, hook up the stereo and listen to audio books in peace and quiet.
It's not unusual for sheds to be converted into an office space. The advent of wireless internet has made working away from a plug socket possible. All you need is a desk, a decent office chair and perhaps some storage for your papers. You don't even require a phone line, so the shed really can make an ideal place to work. All you need is a coffee machine.
Save on expensive sports club membership by transforming your shed into a mini gym. Depending on the size of your shed, invest in some easy to store / foldable pieces, just make sure to check ceiling height first. You may need a radio or TV screen to keep you going while running on the treadmill (though a laptop would suffice), a mini fridge in which to keep bottles of water and a stack of towels.
How do you power this new space? Install some solar lighting panels. Exterior lighting will be handy when/ if you are in the garden late into the evening, too.
Of course, you'll need to ensure the structure is fully waterproofed, though most new sheds are already finished with some sort of industrial coating or sealant, just ensure when you put your shed together, there are no gaps.
Don't forget security. The humble padlock will surely not be enough now that you've installed an array of gadgets, so you might now need a shed alarm. Infra-red alarms are ideal as they sense any movement that you wouldn't hear while in the house.
Don't let you shed go to waste, with a bit of work, it really can become an extension of the house.
