Finding a kitchen designer that will not only give you the kitchen you always dreamt of but will also make the whole process enjoyable and stress free can be a daunting task.

With so many to choose from how do know which designer will do the best job?

Tip 1: Define what you want from your kitchen designer first.

Do you want just a standalone design service or would you like someone to handle the whole project from design through to any building works and installation for you. Although on the face of it all kitchen design services look similar there is a big variation in their approach and type of service they offer. Defining your needs from the very start will help you shortlist designers offering the kind of service that is right for you.

Tip 2: Don’t just rely on one source when short listing.

Ask friends & neighbours that have recently had their kitchens fitted. Can they recommend anyone? Look through your local papers and publications. If you are looking for something truly bespoke then you may also have to look further afield – look on the internet and any dedicated home improvement and interior design magazines. Make a shortlist of designers that can match the kind of service & design requirements you are looking for and very importantly by asking to see their portfolio and references.

Tip 3: Choose a designer who will deliver on every aspect of your kitchen design.

Can they deliver on budget and time requirements? What initial ideas are they putting forward? Are they discussing practicalities with you? Of course your kitchen needs to look great and come in on budget but it also needs to function great too. Choose a designer that has the necessary experience and whom you can bounce your ideas off. After all you are the one who will live with your kitchen and you will also know the current flaws of your existing kitchen. Being able to discuss these points at ease is essential to getting the design right. Read their client testimonials and ask to speak to at least one of their past clients to see what kind of experience and end result they had.

Tip 4: Meet up face to face and if possible go to their showroom.

Meeting your kitchen designer face to face is crucial and if you can go and see examples of their work in a showroom setting even better. This way you will be able to judge their design skills and attention to detail far better than if you were to just see a set of drawings alone. Do you get along with them? Do they inspire confidence that they will deliver what they say they can and is this backed up by what you see?

Tip 5: Make sure they understand your design taste and practical requirements.

You want a kitchen designed for you not just a kitchen design. Before you sign on the dotted line make absolutely sure that the kitchen designer you choose understands what you want from your kitchen. Be forthcoming with your ideas and make sure they are being taken on board. A good kitchen designer will always listen to your ideas & requirements and discuss them at length. All your requirements have to be fully understood before they even start your bespoke kitchen design. If you are in any doubt walk away and go to the next designer on your shortlist. The design process has to be two way in order for you to end up with not only a kitchen that looks great, a kitchen that looks great and works perfectly for you.
