Apartments to Rent in Durham

home design Apartments to Rent in Durham

Apartments to rent in Durham are highly desirable due to its iconic Cathedral and Castle World Heritage Site, Durham City is the jewel in the crown of an extraordinary county.

Voted the ‘best city in the UK’ by Condé Nast Traveller magazine, Durham is one of the finest cultural and historical destinations in the UK. A quintessential old English University City, it has a wonderful timeless quality with rowing on the Wear and relaxing riverside walks, yet buzzes with a vibrant contemporary culture with superb cafés, artisan workshops, boutiques, galleries and museums and many very desirable apartments to rent in Durham.

Shopping
Stylish boutiques and quirky craft shops jostle for attention alongside high street brands, while Durham Indoor Market still retains its Victorian charm. Durham has two shopping centres, Prince Bishop’s and The Gates that play home to popular high street brands. For a unique shopping experience, however, visit The Mugwump and you’ll find a wide selection of designer clothing shops or browse the beautiful Oxfam boutique store, the only one outside of London on Durham’s Elvet Bridge.
Durham Indoor Market also boasts around 60 stalls selling a wide selection of fine goods. In addition the weekly Saturday Outdoor Retail Market in the city centre offers around 30 stalls selling a unique range of retail clothing and goods.

Heritage and culture
Dating back to 1093 Durham Cathedral, at the heart of the city, is a centre of Christianity and is one of the world’s finest examples of Romanesque architecture. Sitting across from the Cathedral is the Castle World Heritage Site, a grand Norman fortress, now part of the Durham College complex, not to be missed.
There is a wealth of culture to be enjoyed in the city centre. The Durham Light Infantry Museum has been described as one of the best military museums in Britain and The Durham Oriental Museum is home to an outstanding collection of prehistoric and ancient art from China, Korea, Japan and Egypt. Quirky Victorian antiquities feature at the Old Fulling Mill Museum of Archaeology in Durham on the banks of the River Wear.

Enjoy great theatre shows at the Gala Theatre or Durham Student Theatre and don’t miss an exciting programme of events including the Brass-Durham International Festival in July and the outstanding Durham Book Festival in late October.

Sports and leisure
Important sporting events and venues including one of the oldest rowing regattas in the country and the Riverside, home to Durham County Cricket Club, a test ground that will host ‘The Ashes’ in 2013. Not to be missed are Durham City’s two spectacular gardens at Crook Hall and the Botanic Gardens Durham.

There’s also plenty of scope to explore Durham on foot, from a leisurely city stroll along the banks of the River Wear to the more strenuous Pennine Way. Durham’s Heritage Coast offers a stunning landscape of beaches, cliffs and headlands, whilst the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Durham Dales are truly special places that have much to offer – from wild moorland to picturesque villages nestling in valleys.

The area also offers a host of adrenalin-fuelled activities guaranteed to leave you feeling exhilarated. Get your heart racing at Beamish Wild, the North East’s new high wire ropes activity course. Peterlee Parachute Centre gives you the opportunity to see the stunning Durham landscape from a whole new perspective – whilst freefalling from 3,000 feet!

Eating out and nightlife
From the simplicity of a home-made cream tea, to a gourmet dining experience there is a wealth of culinary treats to sample in Durham. From stylish cafes, traditional restaurants and experimental eateries there is a lot to choose from. Top spots include the Almshouse Cafe near Durham Cathedral, Bistro 21, Gourmet Spot, and award winning Vennels Cafe. Watch out for the TasteDurham quality award which features for around 30 best food and drink restaurants in Durham City and many are just a short walk from apartments to rent in Durham.
