Alternative Uses for the Garden Shed

home design Alternative Uses for the Garden Shed

The majority of home owners have a shed in their back garden. It’s often stuffed full of gardening tools, such as lawnmowers, shovels and rakes. Maybe you keep your bike in there, or even old tins of paint in case the opportunity ever arises for their use.

But sheds don’t have to be this boring! You may be surprised to know that people have found many ingenious ways of creating beautiful spaces in their garden sheds. The best part is that in the UK, sheds are considered temporary structures and are therefore exempt from planning permissions. If you ever wanted that luxury study space but couldn’t get the permission to extend your home, why not build a garden shed?

Let’s have a look at some alternative uses for the garden shed:

Playhouse

Perhaps an already popular option, wooden playhouses are a great way of utilising your garden shed for a greater purpose. If you have children, they will love having their own space to play in. Decorate it with bright paints, curtains and cushions, and let them keep their favourite toys inside. This is a great option of the summer!

Hobby Hut

If you have a hobby, such as arts and crafts, take your activities out of the kitchen and into the garden shed! Dedicating a room to your favourite craft lets you fully immerse yourself in what you love. Install good lighting and a stereo to play your favourite music.

Study

Today, more people are deciding to work from home. The problem though is that many homes lack a dedicated study room. Instead of cluttering up your bedroom or dining room with your work life, why not build a dedicated study in your garden? This is a brilliant option to convert your shed into. This truly separates your work life from your home life, while not being too far from the kettle in the kitchen. Keep the room warm with an electric heater for the winter, and lay carpet to keep the room feeling comfortable.

Summer Bar

Perhaps not one for those from the UK, a summer bar is a fun and useful option to have in your garden for all those summer barbecues. Create a large opening with a hatch and serve cocktails to your guests. Attach spirit dispensers to the back walls with quirky artwork, and add a mini fridge to keep your drinks ice cool.

As you can see, garden sheds don’t have to be boring junk stores. Get your creative hat on and see what you can do with your garden shed.
